  • A Masters Mind. Part II

Part II - What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up.

    Stop..

    Lets rewind my life.

Starting at age 4, I think it would be hillarious to just note everything I wanted to be.

Singer, Rapper, Actor, Writer, Police Officer, Cashier, Teller, Customer Service Agent, Vetrainarian, Supervisor, Accountant, Scientist, Gynacologist (sp), Comedian, News Anchor.

Okay, so thats just a partial list...But as of the last few months, it has boiled down to:

    * Teacher - I always wanted to teach, and since my last job was mostly teaching, meh, why not.
    * Graphic Designer - I love it, (note the website)
    * News Anchor - Yes, I love talking, and I love TV News...(See 25 things, Michael Version. No I am not linking)

However, as of the last week, I think I have decided.

I want to be a Middle School Counselor. Yes, I know, out of left field for someone like me. But I noticed something lately...

    People love talking to me.

    Yes...I repeat...

    People love talking to me.

Strangers on the street will tell me their life story. Their WHOLE life story, as if I have known them for years.
My good friends, (including HIM) will call just to talk. And the funny part is, as I have gotten older, I have noticed that, I really do comprehend everything someone says to me, in order to formulate an opinion to assist them.

Even Holmes said I have good advice. (By the way "Mama" is okay. Still in ICU, thanks for the prayers, but I do want to clarify (as I have recieved calls), "Mama" is my great-grandmother. When I speak of my mother, I say Lisa or Mother. But thanks for the prayers!) Now Holmes is very wise, so this is a lot coming from her! (And shes a nut! Crazy old lady!)

So. What the hell does this have to do with anything?

Well I know everyone has been waiting to know what I plan to get my masters in. So, for the record, let me go ahead and put it out for the world.

I am going to grad school to get MY masters in...
    SCHOOL COUNSELING.

(And technically, I will also go back to grad school to get my Masters in School Adminstration.)

    So theres your answer.

In regards to the school choices....

    I have a new top 10:

    1. Duke University - Durham, NC.
(I doubt this will change, despite I would have to get a M.A.T. here, but hey gotta go with my Dream school)

    2. Liberty University - Lynchburg, VA [THIS WEEKS BIG JUMPER!]

    3. NC A&T State University - Greensboro, NC

    4. Norfolk State University - Norfolk, VA

    5. College of William and Mary - Williamsburg, VA

    6. Howard University - Washington, DC

    7. Old Dominion University - Norfolk, VA

    8. Hampton University - Hampton, VA

    9. East Carolina University - Greenville, NC

    10. Loyola College - Baltimore, MD...

Now, in case you are quite mean, here are the ones who were voted off the island.

    Morgan State
    Coppin State
    SC State
    Francis Marion
    Virginia Commonwealth
    Christopher Newport
    Univ. of Mary Washington
    University of Richmond
    James Madison University
    Winston Salem State University
    High Point University
    Campbell University.

Next week - Part III - That damn GPA and that damn GRE.

what the hell?! 3/4ths of your tags have NOTHING to do with this post!

and where is curriculum and instruction?!?!? ::pouts::

and you're only sticking to one region of the country for school. why is that?

  • whoanow

@saturdai17 - Lol, I know...things that were on my mind...Lol. I love Curriculum and instruction, but a LOT of the programs are for teachers who already have certification. As much as I love it, I dont want to have an extra 2 years of schooling (Lazy i know) so I had to defer that dream. And I have to be within 6 hrs of home, and below the mason dixon line. Lol

  • saturdai17

@whoanow - i can't talk, i'm only 3 hrs from home. but my UG was 7 hours away, speeding of course

i guess i'll give you a pass on the C&I...

  • HeadStrongChica

COOL! I'm actually very seriously considering going this route as well...but I'm a few years away from this...so undergrad will be done for me NEXT SPRING and then at least a year or two off from undergrad for me, gotta pay off these loans before I incur more debt! anyway, Hampton's school counseling program is pretty good, I know a few of their graduates who are employed in that field and love their jobs now...Winthrop and UNC-Greensboro are at the top of my list right now!

Why Liberty @ #2? I'm def curious about that one!

but COOL revelation. I had a similar ephiphany too this week about this.

  • whoanow

@saturdai17 - lol jeez thanks! lol. Yeah I am debating whether I want to be 300+ miles away again. lol

@HeadStrongChica - LOL WOW. I am laughing because Winthrop and UNCG are numbers 12 and 13 on my list! Liberty is #2 because Its close to family and they have an online program, if so I choose! Lol

@manofcivility - Well, I mean if you circle around, bosoms are bosoms! Lol. Yes, GO DUKE!

  • EmptyBubble

    Hey, chico...

1st of all, much, much luck on applying to and getting into grad school... School counseling sounds like a great way to go... I def. hope that works out for you!

2ndly...I'm glad to hear your great-grandmother is okay and I really pray she only gets better... and I hope and pray for more strength for you and your family as you support her during this time...

lastly...since you say you really like graphic design so much, yet as far as I can see, you don't plan on pursuing it educationally or career-wise, you really should check out this website I've been going to a lot lately called Worth1000.com.  They have a lot of different contests in the areas of Photoshop, Photography, Multimedia & Text.  I used to try to do the Photoshop ones, but those participants go HARD!  lol... I still got much brushin' up to do before I continue in that area... Also more recently tried Photography, but again...my skills aren't quite at the level of some of the people up there - mostly 'cause of the kinda camera I have, but I DIGRESS, lol.  Lately, I've been really into the Text ones, and that seems to be where I've been most succeeding...but there is one up there that is really cool because the winners actually get paid.  It's the Jackpot category, and basically, a bunch of different companies go up there and solicit help with the creation of their company logo.  And there are contests for whoever can come up with the best one.  If I put a lot of my brain & energy into trying to hone my Photoshop (& whatever other programs they use) skills, I probably could somewhat hang with the entries up there...but in the meantime, I really think it'd be cool to at least have people I know taking a shot at some of the contests.

You really should check it out.  If you're really good, it seems like it'd be a great way to make some side cash (and the cash prizes, by the way, range in the hundreds & sometimes the thousands!)

In addition to the cash, it's just cool personally to put your work up there to see how it fairs compared to everyone else's...and people's feedback on it.  Speaking of which, even if you don't do the Jackpot category, you might still find one or several of the others interesting as I have.

But AIIGHT.  I'm done typing your comment box off.  'Till next time!
